What is PDF Merging?
PDF merging is the process of combining two or more PDF documents into a single, unified file. The resulting document preserves all original pages, formatting, fonts, and embedded images from each source file — exactly as they appeared in the originals.
Common use cases include assembling multi-chapter reports, combining scanned documents, bundling invoices and supporting receipts, merging portfolio pages, and consolidating tax documents before submitting them electronically.
How It Works — Privacy & Technology
OrangeTool uses pdf-lib (v1.17.1), an open-source JavaScript library, to manipulate PDF files entirely within your browser using the Web APIs. When you select files, they are read into memory as ArrayBuffers using the FileReader API. The pdf-lib library then parses each PDF, extracts its pages, and appends them to a new combined document — all without ever contacting our servers.
The merged output is generated as a Blob object and offered as a download via a temporary object URL. Once you close the tab, the data is discarded. We have zero access to your files.
Use Cases
- Business reports: Combine executive summary, data sheets, and appendices into one document.
- Tax filing: Merge salary slips, investment proofs, and Form 16 into a single PDF for submission.
- Legal documents: Bundle contracts, addendums and signatures into one file for archiving.
- Portfolios: Assemble design pages, certificates, and cover letters for job applications.
- Academic work: Combine research papers, bibliography, and appendices before submission.
Limitations
- Password-protected PDFs cannot be merged until they are unlocked.
- Very large files (500MB+) may be slow to process, depending on your device's available RAM.
- Merge order is determined by the order files were selected; reordering requires removing and re-adding files.
- The tool does not currently support merging specific page ranges — it always includes all pages from each PDF.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I merge PDFs without uploading them to a server?
Yes. All processing happens in your browser using pdf-lib. Your files never leave your device, and nothing is transmitted to our servers.
How many PDFs can I merge at once?
There is no hard limit — merge as many as your browser's memory allows. For very large batches, merge in groups of 5–10 files for best performance.
Will the merged PDF lose quality or formatting?
No. Pages are copied directly — fonts, images, and layout are preserved at full fidelity. There is no re-encoding or quality loss.
Can I merge password-protected PDFs?
Not directly. You'll need to remove the password protection first (using a PDF editor or Adobe Reader), then use this tool to merge the unlocked files.
Is this tool better than iLovePDF or Smallpdf?
OrangeTool is the only major option that is completely free, unlimited, and requires zero uploads. iLovePDF and Smallpdf upload your files to cloud servers — a privacy risk for sensitive documents. We process everything locally.
