What is GST?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a comprehensive, multi-stage, destination-based indirect tax introduced in India on 1 July 2017. It replaced a complex web of over 17 central and state taxes — including VAT, Service Tax, Excise Duty, and CST — with a single, unified tax structure. GST is now applicable across the entire supply chain, from manufacturer to final consumer, with credit for taxes paid at each stage (Input Tax Credit).
GST Formulas — How the Calculator Works
Adding GST (Exclusive → Inclusive)
When your base price does not include GST and you need to compute the final price:
GST Amount = Base Price × (GST Rate / 100)
Total = Base Price + GST Amount
Example: ₹1,000 + 18% GST = ₹1,000 × 0.18 = ₹180 tax → Total ₹1,180
Removing GST (Inclusive → Exclusive)
When your price already includes GST and you need to find the pre-tax amount:
Base Price = Total / (1 + GST Rate / 100)
GST Amount = Total − Base Price
Example: ₹1,180 inclusive of 18% GST → Base = ₹1,180 / 1.18 = ₹1,000 → GST = ₹180

CGST, SGST, and IGST — What's the Difference?
For intra-state sales (seller and buyer in same state), the total GST is split equally between:
- CGST (Central Goods & Services Tax) — goes to the central government
- SGST (State Goods & Services Tax) — goes to the state government
For inter-state sales (seller and buyer in different states), the full GST is collected as IGST (Integrated GST) by the central government, which then distributes the state's share. Our calculator shows the CGST + SGST split in the results.
Accuracy & Methodology
This calculator uses the standard GST formulas as defined by the GST Council of India. All calculations are performed with floating-point arithmetic and rounded to 2 decimal places. For official tax compliance, always verify amounts using your accounting software or a chartered accountant. GST rates and slabs are subject to revision by the GST Council.
