Understanding BMI
A simple guide to interpreting your Body Mass Index results.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple numerical value derived from your height and weight. It is used by healthcare professionals worldwide as a screening tool to identify possible weight problems in adults.
The BMI Categories
For most adults, BMI results are interpreted as follows:
- Below 18.5: Underweight
- 18.5 – 24.9: Healthy Weight
- 25.0 – 29.9: Overweight
- 30.0 or Higher: Obese
Limitations of BMI
While useful, BMI is not a perfect metric. It does not distinguish between body fat and muscle mass. For example, athletes or bodybuilders may have a high BMI despite having very low body fat. It also doesn't account for age, sex, or bone structure.
Why BMI Matters
A high BMI can be an indicator of high body fatness, which is linked to increased risk for chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers. Conversely, a low BMI may indicate nutritional deficiencies or underlying health issues.
Next Steps
If your BMI falls outside the "Healthy Weight" range, it is recommended to speak with a healthcare provider. They can provide a more comprehensive assessment including body fat percentage, diet, and lifestyle factors.
